
A member of the SDPU(U) Political Bureau since October, 1998. Head of the SDPU(U) faction in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine since June 18, 2002.
He was born on January 10, 1934 in Rivny region. In 1958 Leonid Kravchuk graduated from Kyiv State University, and in 1970, from the Academy of Social Studies at the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (KPRS), he is a candidate of economic sciences, an honored doctor of the National University "Kyiv Mohyla Academy" and a Hero of Ukraine (2001).
From 1958 to 1960 he worked as a teacher at Chernivtsi Financial College, from 1960 to 1967, as a consultant - methodologist of the House of Political Education, a lecturer, an assistant secretary and head of agitation and propaganda department of Chernivtsi Oblast Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. From 1967 to 1970 he was a post-graduate student of the Academy of Social Studies at the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. From 1970 to 1988 he was head of the sector, inspector, assistant secretary of the Central Committee, 1st Deputy Head of the department, head of agitation and propaganda department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. From 1988 to 1990 he was head of ideology department, secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. In 1990 he became 2nd secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. In 1989 -1990 he was a candidate to Politburo membership, from 1990 to 1991, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. From 1990 to 1991 Leonid Kravchuk was Head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, from 1991 to 1994, Ukrainian President. A national deputy of Ukraine of 10th -14th (including 1st - 4th) Verkhovna Rada. A member of the Verkhovna Rada's Committee on Foreign Affairs and Relations with the CIS (1998-2002). A member of the Verkhovna Rada's Committee on Foreign Affairs (since 2002). Head of the State Commission monitoring the implementation of administrative reforms in Ukraine, Co-Head of the All-Ukrainian Alliance of Democratic Forces "Zlahoda".
He has been a member of the Party since 1998. In 1998 he became a member of the SDPU(U) Political Council. He was a delegate of the SDPU(U)'s 13th-16th Congresses. He was conferred the order of "Prince Yaroslav Mudry" of the 5th and 4th degrees and the order of "State".
He has been elected a national deputy of Ukraine of the 4th Verkhovna Rada from the election list of the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (United), N 5 on the list.
